My Four Best Preakness Stakes Picks For 2013:
As mentioned before, Orb won the Kentucky Derby and so far, it looks like there may not be any other horses that have what it takes to beat Orb.
2) Normandy Invasion
Even though he finished in fourth at the Kentucky Derby this year, he's never been beaten by more than 3 1/2 lengths. This shows that he's always in the mix and has a very good shot at pulling through on one of them, despite not having won any races past the maiden ranks.
Goldencents started off strong and won the Santa Anita Derby, but during the Kentucky Derby he gave a rather disappointing performance and finished in 17th place. Even though his low finish was credited to a poor start in the race, he has another chance to take an early lead at the Preakness Stakes. This will give him a chance to show off his speed that he's well-known for and maybe he'll even take home the win.
Oxbow put forth quite the effort at the Kentucky Derby and ended up finishing in 6th place. All the way up to the 1/4 mile mark, he was only a half length behind Normandy Invasion who was the leader at the time. Even so, as the race continued, he began to fade quickly down the stretch and couldn't keep up with the pace he had previously set. Something to keep in mind is that the Kentucky Derby was 10 furlongs long and the Preakness Stakes is only 9.5 furlongs long, so Oxbow has a much better chance of being able to keep up the pace through the end of this race and finish as one of the leaders.
Can Orb Win The First Triple-Crown Since 1978?
The pressure is building as Affirmed's record of winning the Triple Crown 35 years ago is at risk of being broken by Orb. As always, the bettors seek out the winner from Churchill Downs and put their money there for the races to follow. It's pretty clear if you take a look at the odds below that this has proven true once again and Orb is clearly the favorite right out of the gate. Leading the Kentucky Derby early on, Normandy Invasion, as well as newcomer, Departing, are both close seconds at Pimlico. Even though the field isn't completely solidified yet and entries can be taken up to May 15th, the field now should be pretty close to what's finalized on May 18th.
