Week March 17th to 23rd
Bookmakers have eventually found the perfect point for margin of losses when it comes to the Philadelphia 76ers. Certainly, Philadelphia is continuing lose games at rates which have reached historic levels – as we head into Monday, they are just two losses away from the NBA record of 26 in a row, currently held by the Cleveland Cavaliers - but the 76ers have managed to be competitive over their last four games. They have managed to stand up firm and go against the spread this past week. This stretch could continue on Monday, with the 76ers considered as 21.5-point underdogs against the San Antonio Spurs, who, by halftime could have sealed the victory.
Coldest ATS - Chicago Bulls (2-2 SU, 0-4 ATS)
The Philadelphia 76ers were undoubtedly helped by a couple of close losses to the Chicago Bulls, who struggled against the spread as they tried to stay locked on the pursuit of the home-court advantage in the first round during the postseason. Chicago only managed to beat the struggling 76ers by eight and 10 points respectively. At the same time, they topped a 12-point defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder and by also the Indiana Pacers by as many points. Looming home games against the Pacers and the Portland Trail Blazers could be very challenging, with a couple of games against the Boston Celtics up next in their schedule.
The Blazers are playing without LaMarcus Aldridge but they have managed to find success. After all they are one of the few teams in the NBA who can do well even when their leading scorer is out and at the same time, they don’t allow their opponents do the same. The Trail Blazers didn’t have any trouble extending their streak of over outcomes to number four during the previous week, as they achieved a 120-115 overtime win against the Milwaukee Bucks. Then they topped the Washington Wizards 116-103 and got bumped 124-94 against the Charlotte Bobcats. Look for their offense to continue to get better as the Blazers continue their road trip with games against the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic, the Atlanta Hawks and the Chicago Bulls before they head back to Portland to take on the Memphis Grizzlies.
Best Under play - Memphis Grizzlies (2-1 SU, 0-3 O/U)
Things are quite the same for the Memphis Grizzlies, either, as the Grizzlies are playing their usual tough defense and they also play good offense to stay in the pursuit of a ticket to the playoffs. The Grizzlies have won two of their last three, with each game - a 96-86 victory against the Utah Jazz, a 91-86 defeat against the Heat in Miami and an 82-71 victory against the Pacers - falling below the total. Memphis will face some very dangerous offenses this upcoming week - hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves before starting a road trip with stops at Utah, Golden State and Portland - so the streak of six straight unders could be in jeopardy.
While the main focus will continue to stay on the respective playoff races and the teams that will be choose to rest some of their star players, there is still much buzz and fuzz around the 76ers' losing streak. The 76ers aren’t going to get much of a break in their quest to avoid equaling the Cleveland Cavaliers' record, as they take on the San Antonio Spurs before and before they head back to Houston for a meeting with the Rockets on Thursday. If the 76ers drop both, they'll look to stop this historic streak on Saturday at home against the quirky Detroit Pistons.
